Thanks to the Solar Power Plant (GES) project implemented at Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University (ALKU), which began generating its first energy on March 7, 2024, the university has not only met its energy needs but also contributed to a reduction of 1,012 tons of carbon emissions.

The 2024 report for the ALKU Solar Power Plant (GES) project, which is the first of its kind in Turkey to be implemented through a Public Performance Contract, has been released. Since it started generating energy on March 7, 2024, the GES project has produced electricity while making a significant environmental contribution. In 2024, the project helped reduce carbon emissions by 1,012 tons, equivalent to planting 1,383 trees. Additionally, ALKU’s GES project was awarded the “Gray Whale” medal after being ranked among the top 45% of the most successful energy production projects worldwide in a statistical report published by the Inverter Group, which supplies equipment for the plant. With this award, ALKU has been recognized as a project that achieved the highest energy savings and the most significant reduction in carbon footprint within a given period.

ENERGY SAVINGS THROUGH GES

In 2024, ALKU’s total electricity consumption was 3,924,867 kWh. Meanwhile, the university's solar power plants generated 2,353,156 kWh of electricity. The generated electricity was balanced hourly and monthly within its respective period. As a result, 177,849 kWh of energy was sold, generating a revenue of 629,020 TL, including VAT. The electricity produced by ALKU’s GES accounted for 59.96% of the university’s total electricity consumption in 2024. Of the total electricity produced, 92.44% was used directly for consumption, while 7.56% was sold due to surplus production. Thanks to its GES plants, ALKU achieved approximately 9.33 million TL in savings in 2024.

RECTOR TÜRKDOĞAN: “WE CONTRIBUTE TO THE NATIONAL ECONOMY WITH GES”

ALKU Rector Prof. Dr. Kenan Ahmet Türkdoğan emphasized that the GES project has met the expected production target within a 10-month period. Highlighting that the surplus energy production also contributed financially to the university, Rector Türkdoğan stated, “The 2024 report for our GES project has been completed. The project has successfully met the expected production levels over a 10-month period. Generating electricity while also earning revenue through GES has set an excellent example for our country. Given the strategic importance of energy worldwide, we need to make greater use of Turkey’s abundant sunny days. By producing renewable energy, we can create substantial economic and environmental benefits. By the end of 2025, we will continue generating energy and revenue through GES. I extend my gratitude to the Energy Management Unit officials and the ALKU family for their dedication to monitoring the GES project, and I hope for an even more productive year ahead.”
